Space Sim?

I've been looking around for a modern space sim, something like Star Wolves, something with RPG elements, ie. upgrades for ships, leveling, customization etc
I'm looking for mainly RPG elements, great replay value, and something that doesnt take 50+ hours just to get a decent character/level and an easy learning curve. Think Spore 'space age' crossed with StarWolves.
hit me up with any recommendations with a link to trailer/game play/developers site, etc

Its called star citizen and is being created by the guy who made the wing commander series, privateer series, and freelancer. Its a crowd funded project and looks pretty bad ass. Plus if you pledge, you get alpha access.

There's an old game called Freelancer. Space sim/shooter. Its outdated of course, but look into the discovery mod for it. The community is still alive and a ton of rpg to it, including a rp server. Check it out, you definitely wont regret it. Took up a fair share of my time at a point

Yea it's pretty fun. Im thinking of getting back into it a small bit. Bad part is starting up. Its time consuming getting money, but everyone is nice and will just send you millions. Its aweeeeesooommmmeeeeeee!!!!! Just wish the money was real o.0

Edit: Tons of Rp stories on their forums. Plus they have extended off the vanilla storyline a bit. Pretty good stuff. The developers are constantly working, and its all around great. Sorta like here(communitywise) but wider age group

This looks awesome and I'll be getting in on that action most likely. I played freelancer for years and that is where i developed my gaming identity. The discovery mod is good there are some others that are really good as well the problem with them is most people don't play or the rp is good in the forums but not in game. I played on Topfreelancers server for ever. Been waiting for a good space sim to come out...
